Completely secluded from the density and fast-paced rhythm of urban life, Sumba offers a different kind of tranquility shaped by its pristine natural landscapes, untouched coastlines, and deeply preserved cultural identity. Nestled within a hidden private beachfront in Sumba, Umarato Beach Club occupies a site blessed with limitless panoramic potential. Beginning with an expansive open sky above, the view extends across rolling green hills and natural contours that stretch toward the shoreline, before meeting untouched white sand and the endless blue horizon of the Sumbanese sea. The site embodies a rare tropical serenity where nature remains raw, immersive, and authentic.
Umarato Beach Club is one of Somia Design’s remote projects, where the design process embraced the challenges of distance, contextual exploration, and a deeper understanding of the site itself. Rather than becoming a limitation, the project’s remoteness encouraged a more sensitive architectural approach carefully considering the surrounding natural landscape, environmental character, accessibility, and local cultural identity. Located within a relatively undeveloped area, the project responds to Sumba’s growing potential as an emerging tourism destination while preserving the authenticity and natural calmness of the site. The architectural strategy was developed through a dynamic spatial relationship between the green landscape and the beachfront, creating immersive transitions between hills, rice fields, tropical vegetation, and the ocean horizon. Through open circulation, layered zoning, and carefully framed views, the masterplan continuously reconnects visitors with the surrounding nature while offering an exclusive, serene, and relaxing spatial experience.
From an architectural perspective, the project’s primary objective was to create a beach club context that responds sensitively to its surroundings, remains accessible, and preserves the authentic values of Sumbanese locality. The design seeks to retain the identity and cultural essence of Sumba’s traditional architecture as an integral part of the spatial experience. Inspired by Sumba’s vernacular heritage particularly the philosophy and formal language of the Uma Mbatangu traditional house local materials such as timber, bamboo, rattan, natural stone, and thatched roofing are reinterpreted into a contemporary tropical architectural expression that balances luxury with contextual sensitivity. Earth-toned palettes, handcrafted elements, and natural textures are integrated to create an atmosphere that feels elegant yet deeply grounded within Sumba’s cultural landscape. Guided by the philosophy of “Unfolding the Site, Connecting the Green and the Beach,” the design aspires to establish harmony between architecture, nature, and local identity delivering an immersive destination that invites visitors to experience the timeless beauty and cultural richness of Sumba through space, materiality, and atmosphere.
